What is ScienceFiction? There are two forms of story telling that are lumped together: science fiction and fantasy. Fantasy deals with stories that take place out of history/out of time, in medieval-ish or mythical times. They deal with realms that have no basis is science fact (i.e. fairies, unicorns, mythological characters and middle-earth). On the other hand, science fiction is the opposite. Sci-fi has, at its core, science fact. The science in most sci-fi stories, is based on theoretical science or extrapolations of know science fact. The technology in science fiction is not out of the realm of real-life possibilities, just not attainable during the current era. Why Science Fiction? The first response that comes to mind is: why not? Science fiction, at its heart, is an analysis of what it means to be human. Whether though aliens or machines, non-human characters represent and single-out different parts of the human psyche. To take that a step further, sci-fi expounds on such issues as morality, religion, social conditions, genetic engineering, the existence of God and our place in the universe. But what sets science fiction apart from other forms of storytelling, is that, inherent in its very nature and presentation, it is the only truly positive fiction. It says there will be a tomorrow, we will survive, we will persevere. At its best, science fiction is told though such grandeur and with an eye for detail, that it cannot help but capture your imagination. Classics such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, Star Trek and novelists such as Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Issac Asimov, Robert Heinlein and H.G. Wells transport you to a different place, help you forget your troubles, simply entertain and/or teach you something about who you are and the world you live in. The amount of creativity necessary to transform everyday events, worries, issues and beliefs into tales that take place in different times, at different places and with different species speaks to the unique and truly remarkable imaginations and talents of those who are successful in this genre. With that said, sci-fi is probably the most overlooked and under appreciated form of storytelling. It resides within the critically un-acclaimed area of popular fiction. In reality, science fiction is probably the most important form of writing because it is the only genre that addresses where we are going...
