Magnetic ore inadvertently beamed aboard the USS Enterprise from the planet Alpha 177 causes a transporter malfunction, and when Captain Kirk beams up from the planet's surface he is unwittingly split into two separate beings. One Kirk is evil, the other is good, but neither can survive in this dual state. While the evil Kirk runs amok and the good Kirk struggles to command, the landing party is stranded on the freezing planet. Mr Spock finally hits on a solution and uses a jury-rigged transporter to rejoin the two Kirks. With the Captain returned to his normal self, the landing party are beamed aboard - shivering but alive. While patroling the perimeter of the Romulan Neutral Zone, the Enterprise learns of the destruction of Federation Outposts Two, Three and Four by an unseen attacker. The Enterprise arrives at the last remaining outpost, but it arrives too late to save it from what turns out to be a Romulan Bird of Prey. The century-old neutral zone was set up as a buffer zone between Federation and Romulan Space, which an incursion from either side to be considered an act of war. This testing of the Neutral Zone by the Romulan crew in a cloaked ship constitutes the first encounter Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew have with the Romulans, but it is not the last. When Kirk and crew are summoned to the home of Dr Thomas Leighton on the Planet Q, it soon becomes apparent they are there for a purpose - to see the actor Anton Karidian, who is suspected by Leighton of being the murderous ex-Governor of Tarsus IV. Twenty years previously, the Governor initiated a massacre of innocent civilians that included Leighton's family as well as some of Kirk's. The USS Enterprise arrives at Starbase 11, but it remains unclear why they were called back. It is then discovered that Spock has made a false computer record to lure Captain Kirk back to the Starbase. The true reasons behind Spock's abnormal behavior are revealed when he hijacks the Enterprise and heads to Talos IV. This violates General Order 7, forbidding any contact with this planet, under penalty of death (one of the very few death crimes around). Fleet Captain Pike was badly injured just months prior to Spock's actions in a training accident which exposed him to dangerously high levels of delta rays. The USS Enterprise serves as the venue for a court-martial proceeding against Commander Spock while the ship is en route to Talos IV. Spock faces many charges, including sabotage and abduction. When it transpires that events have been heavily influenced by the powerful Talosians, who can generate complex illusions, Kirk drops the charges against his first officer and allows Pike to be delivered to the planet to live out the rest of his days. The USS Enterprise, heading for Starbase 9, encounters a black hole. A massive effort is made to prevent the ship from being destoryed by the huge gravitational forces. Reversing the warp engines pulls the Enterprise away, but also propels it back in time and space to 1969, Earth. The Enterprise, by appearing over Nebraska in 1969, threatens to disrupt Earth's history. When a US Air Force Captain, John Chistopher, is beamed aboard after his ship breaks up in the ship's tractor beam, the Enterprise crew must find a way of returning the timeline to normal. The appearance of Captain Christopher aboard the USS Enterprise presents several problems. First, the ship has been recorded on film and will be analyzed by government officals. Second, Captain Christopher must be returned to Earth to have a son who will one day lead an important space expedition. Finally, the Enterprise crew must not further pollute the timeline before they can return to their own time. An away team of Kirk, Spock and Sulu retrieve the film of the USS Enterprise on Earth. Christopher is returned to his jet with only his only recollection being a brief glimpse of something unidentifiable. Scotty then manages to return the ship back to its proper time by duplicating the 'slingshot effect'. The USS Enterprise responds to a distree call near the Mutara sector from a centuries old ship - a DY-100 class sleeper from Earth. After the SS Botany Bay is boarded, and its inhabitants are awakened, Kirk and his officers discover a crew of refugees from the Eugenics Wars of 20th century Earth. The leader, Khan is a charismatic genetically engineered human whose history on Earth was that of a ruthless and powerful dictator. He ruled over a quarter of the entire planet from 1992-1996, encompassing southern Asia and the Middle East. Khan and his followers escaped certain death on Earth via the sleeper ship. With Khan's genetically engineered superhuman strength comes superhuman arrogance. He attempts to gain control of the USS Enterprise, even seducing one of Captain Kirk's officers, historian Marla McGivers, in the process. Kirk and his crew thwart Khan's plan. The captain must now choose between holding Khan prisoner, to be dealt with by offical means, or else exile him and his followers on a deserted, but inhabitable planet to start their lives over again. He chooses the latter and, rather than face a court martial, McGivers follows Khan to settle on Ceti Alpha V. Eventuallyu, she will marry the enigmatic would-be world conqueror. Arriving at Organia, the USS Enterporise finds that the Klingons are attacking the planet. Captain Kirk and Mr Spock meet the Organian Council - four elderly men who don't appear overly concerned with the prospect of war. Klingon Commander Kor heads the Klingon force on Organia, and Kirk and Spock act as an undercover team to find out more information. When the council reveal them to the Klingons, they are sentenced to death. With matters about to come to ahead on Organia, the true nature of the Organians is revealed. They take their natural, non-corporeal state, and inform both parties that they are now subject to a peace treaty, the Organian Peace Treaty, which forbibs hostilities between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Dr McCoy inadvertently injects himself with highly dangerous new drug, cordrazine, while treating Mr Sulu on the bridge. Acting irrationally, McCoy attacks a transporter operator and beams himself down to an unknown planet containing a mysterious time portal. Kirk and a landing party follow him to the planet, but McCoy eludes the rescue attempt and passes through the portal, the Guardian of Forever. History is altered as he passes back to 1930s Earth, and Kirk and Spock follow him in an attempt to set time back on its proper course. Kirk and Spock arrive in Earth's past and take up lodgings. Kirk meets, and falls in love with, social worker Edith Keeler, while Spock sets about trying to access his tricorder with the unsophisicated equipment of the day. Spock manages to tap into the machine and learns of two different Earth histories. One is the past he and Kirk are from and the other is an alternative where Earth was taken over by Nazi Germany following World War II. The only way to prevent this alternate future, they learn, is to allow the death of Edit Keeler - the women Kirk is in love with. If the past is allowed to continue, Keeler's pacifist ideals will delay the US Government's entry into the war. Reunited with McCoy, Kirk must hold the doctor back from saving Edith as she crosses a busy road. Kirk turns away, unable to watch Edith die. This is one of the hardest acts Kirk will ever have to perform, but time is restored and he and his friends make it back to their own place in history. While negotiating a peace settlement on Epsilon Canaris III, Assitant Federation Commissioner Nancy Hedford contracts Sakuro's disease. The USS Enterprise is assigned to treat Hedford, and the senior staff take the Galileo shuttlecraft to collect her. Nancy Hedford is already at the end of her tether when the Galileo shuttlecraft's trajectory is stopped and rerouted to the planet Gamma Canaris N. There, they meet the youthful inventor of warp drive, Zefram Cochrane. Supposedly 137 years old, the refreshed Cochrane reveals that he was drawn to this planet by a cloud-like being he refers to as the Companion when he left Alpha Centauri at age 87 to die in space. The true intentions of the Companion are revealed when Spock and Kirk use a universal translator to get inside the mind of the benevolent creature. It turns out that Cochrane and the Companion have had a symbiotic relationship which led to them both forming an attachment with the other. When Nancy is in the final stages of her illness, the Companion decides to inhabit her body and take on a mortal form. Cochrane remains behind on the planet with 'Nancy' to live out the rest of their days together. |
